Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Counselling with Trevor
On this page, you’ll find answers to some common questions about my counselling services. If you have any additional questions or would like further clarification, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Is Our Conversation Confidential?
Yes, everything we discuss in our counselling sessions is strictly confidential. I adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines, and any notes I take are securely stored and coded to ensure no identifying information is included.
There are some legal limitations to confidentiality, which we will discuss during our first session. These limitations are rare and typically relate to situations where there is a risk of harm.
To maintain your confidentiality outside of our sessions, I will never approach you if we cross paths in public. I also do not accept friend requests on social media to protect your privacy further.
Do We Sign a Contract or Agreement?
Yes, we will have a therapeutic contract that outlines the expectations for both of us during counselling. This agreement ensures clarity about the counselling process and my role as a counsellor.
- We will review the contract during the initial consultation.
- The contract will be emailed to you for your review and signature. If you’re unable to physically sign, a typed statement agreeing to the terms is also acceptable. Please be sure to include your full name and contact details when sending the agreement back.
How Will I Know When to End Counselling?
The decision to end counselling is a gradual process that we will discuss during our sessions. As our work progresses, we will explore when and how you feel ready to bring closure to the therapeutic process.
Typically, we would allow two to four weeks to plan for a smooth and thoughtful ending of therapy.
What Happens in the First Counselling Session?
In the first session, we will cover:
- An overview of confidentiality and any limitations.
- What you can expect from me as your counsellor.
- What is expected of you as the client.
- Agreement on the counselling contract (for video counselling, this will be confirmed via email).
This initial meeting helps establish a safe and transparent therapeutic relationship from the start.
Do You Have Supervision?
Yes, I undergo regular supervision with a qualified counselling supervisor. This helps me maintain a high standard of practice and manage any challenges that may arise during therapy.
During supervision, I do not disclose any personal information about my clients. This process is for self-reflection and professional development to ensure I provide the best possible care.
I also participate in Continuing Personal Development (CPD), which is regularly monitored and audited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
Are There Any Cancellation Charges?
Yes, I have a cancellation policy to ensure fairness and respect for both of our time. If you need to cancel or reschedule your session, please provide at least 48 hours’ notice to avoid a charge. If you cancel with less than 48 hours’ notice, you will be asked to pay the full cost of the session.
If I am forced to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances or planned time off, there will be no charge for that session.
What Happens if I Need to Cancel an Appointment?
If you need to cancel an appointment, please inform me as soon as possible. I will make every effort to reschedule the session at a time that works for you. If you cancel with less than 48 hours’ notice, the full session fee will apply.
However, you will not be charged for sessions that I cancel due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances.
